Global Health Case Competition
In 2016, the Eck Institute for Global Health (EIGH) sponsored the first annual Notre Dame Global Health Case Competition. This competition brings together undergraduate and graduate students from multiple disciplines to creatively address critical global health challenges in a competitive and collaborative environment. Students are given an innovative learning experience that trains future global health leaders.
The winning team of the internal Notre Dame competition will apply for the external competition hosted each year at Emory University.
Goal of the Case Competition?
The goal of the competition is to promote multidisciplinary cooperation, train future global health leaders, and provide students with a real-world problem-based learning opportunity. The topics may include health care policy, public health implementation, business partnership/investment, medical research, cultural understanding, and international law.
It is essential for students who are interested in global health to participate in a competition like this in order to develop the practical skills needed in the global development arena. Due to the complexity of global development issues, it is vital for students to understand the importance of all disciplines including, but not limited to, healthcare, business, engineering and public policy. In this competition, students are exposed to such areas of study as they seek out a complex solution to a global development issue.
Who can participate?
Undergraduate students, graduate students, and professional students from all colleges at the University of Notre Dame work together in teams to present a practical solution to a real-world global health challenge. The competition is designed to encourage students with different academic backgrounds to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary approach.
How does the Case Competition work?
The EIGH begins recruiting students interested in participating in the Global Health Case Competition at the beginning of each academic year, with Notre Dame's competition falling early in the following spring semester.
In the fall and spring semesters, there are several seminars that provide students with opportunities to learn more about the competition and talk with faculty and staff members who have global health and development experience. Interested students are highly encouraged to attend all the dinner seminars.
Students commit to participating in the Case Competition by signing up at the end of the fall semester. Students are then assigned to work in teams of 4-6 students at the beginning of the spring semester. The teams must represent at least three different colleges/schools.
During the spring semester dinner seminar, teams receive the case. Teams have approximately a week to develop and present a solution to a given global health challenge in front of a panel of judges and a larger audience. Requirements for the solution and the criteria upon which teams are judged differ each year as they are case-specific.
