Infectious Diseases
The University of Notre Dame has long been recognized for its contributions to infectious disease research, particularly in vector-borne diseases, such as malaria and dengue. Other important areas of research include tuberculosis, antimicrobial resistance, and neglected tropical diseases, such as leishmaniasis and schistosomiasis.
Building on Notre Dame’s pioneering work in biological sciences and infectious diseases by George B. Craig Jr., and Frank Collins, the founding director of the precursor organization that became the Eck Institute for Global Health in 2010, the Institute continues to lead in the prevention, detection, and treatment of infectious diseases that remain among the leading causes of illness and death worldwide.
Today, the Eck Institute brings together experts from across disciplines, spanning biology, chemistry, the social sciences, engineering, business, and economics. This collaborative approach drives solutions to infectious disease threats, from mosquito-borne diseases and tuberculosis to antimicrobial resistance.

Infectious Diseases and Environmental Factors
Over the years, our affiliated and core researchers have led extensive studies on malaria, dengue, and tuberculosis, diseases that profoundly affect communities and shape health systems across diverse cultural contexts worldwide.
The Eck Institute recognizes the inextricable link between environmental factors and infectious diseases. Our research examines how air and water quality, pollution, vector habitats, and climate change influence the spread and severity of infectious diseases. By identifying and mitigating environmental drivers, we work toward sustainable, science-based solutions that protect both ecosystems and human health.
