George B. Craig, Jr. Memorial Lecture presented by alumnus Tom Burkot

Notre Dame alumnus Tom Burkot, PhD, a leader in global disease research, delivered the 2015 George B. Craig, Jr. Memorial Lecture titled George B. Craig, Jr., Notre Dame, and the Fight to Eradicate Malaria to a packed crowd on Friday, September 18. Burkot, a 1976 graduate of Notre Dame, has been at the Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine at James Cook University since 2011. His research in mosquito control has included many projects with fellow Notre Dame alumni including Ned Walker at Michigan State University and Bill Hawley with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stationed in Atlanta. Burkot also works closely with Notre Dame faculty members Neil Lobo and Frank Collins.…

Notre Dame Partnership in Global Health Research Yields Results

Molly Elston, MS ’12, recently returned to the University of Notre Dame (UND) after serving as a Global Health Research Associate in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, for two years with the Health Systems Strengthening Initiative (HSSI). Brianna Wanlass, ‘15 MS, was invited to present her 2015 University of Notre Dame’s Master of Science in Global Health Capstone Research Project, “Developing a Surveillance System to Support and Strengthen Palliative Care Services in Uganda”, at the 6th Biennial Palliative Care Conference in Kampala, Uganda, on August 27-28, 2015. Global Breast Cancer Research Symposium The inaugural symposium “Global Breast Cancer Research at Notre Dame… and Beyond”, jointly hosted by the Eck Institute for Global Health and the Harper Cancer Research Institute, highlighted the expansive scope of breast cancer research active on campus.  Following faculty research presentations and a Keynote speaker, an interactive poster session and reception focused on the work of trainees at the undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral levels conducting innovative breast cancer research.  Drawn from six departments in the Colleges of Science and Engineering at Notre Dame and Indiana University School of Medicine – South Bend, poster presenters showcased a comprehensive approach to breast cancer research.…

New faculty member brings unique background to Notre Dame’s Master of Science in Global Health program

Heidi Beidinger-Burnett, PhD, is the new Assistant Professor for the Eck Institute for Global Health. Beidinger recently joined Notre Dame after working as a consultant in K-12 education for nearly 10 years. She developed expertise in leadership, school redesign, curriculum evaluation, and development. Prior to her tenure in K-12, Beidinger served in various leadership roles at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for 13 years.
