"Exploiting Vector Ecology for Global Public Health"

Dr. Grieco is currently an Associate Professor and Director of the Medical Zoology Program in the Division of Tropical Public Health at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Maryland. He also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Emerging Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Grieco has served on a number of external committees to include the steering committee of the Febrile Vector Borne Disease Program for the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center; the Repellent Advisory Committee for the Armed Forces Pest Management Board; and the Vector Control Working Group within the Roll Back Malaria Program of the World Health Organization.  He is a consultant to the World Health Organization Pesticide Evaluation Scheme (WHOPES) and was co-leader during the development of the Guidelines for Efficacy Testing of Spatial Repellents and a regional consultant to the Pan American Health Organization for country of Surinam.  He is also the Director of the Belize Vector and Ecology Center.

Dr. Grieco’s research program primarily focuses on exploring the vector ecology of a number of arthropod-borne diseases to guide the development of novel control strategies. His activities also involve identifying key environmental determinants that underlie risk for exposure to Malaria, Chagas, Japanese Encephalitis, and Rickettsial pathogens.  He has active collaboration in South Korea, Thailand, Nepal, Peru, and Belize, as well as a number of industry partners in BASF, SC Johnson and Olfactor Laboratories, Inc.

Dr. Grieco completed his B.S. in Biology from the University of Notre Dame, an M.S. in Medical Entomology from Texas A&M University, and earned his Ph.D. in Medical Entomology from the Uniformed Services University in 2000 working on the vector bionomics of Anopheles vestitipennis and An. albimanus in southern Belize.
